ACRES FOR AUROVILLE – 15 August 2017
This 15th August 2017 marks the completion of the third year of ‘Acres for Auroville’ campaign. Looking back, there is good reason to feel gratified and encouraged. Thanks to the spirit of goodwill and collaboration from almost 1000 individuals, the campaign has reached its target for the third consecutive year and, to date, enabled purchase/exchange of 15 plots within the Master Plan area. In comparison with the scale of challenge, the success may seem modest; nevertheless, A4A is offering the indispensable funding resource for the Land Board’s vital work.
This 15th August is also significant for two other reasons. It is Sri Aurobindo’s birthday and it is India’s 70th Independence Day. The confluence has profound significance. As Jawaharlal Nehru said in his memorable address in the Indian Parliament: “At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.”
The soul of India found its utterance in a remote corner of what was then the French India. At the request of All India Radio, Tiruchirappalli, Sri Aurobindo wrote a message which he termed a “personal declaration” of his life-long dreams – the dreams in which India figured as the central torch-bearer. 21 years after India’s Independence, Auroville was founded on 28th February 1968. A deep and comprehensive study of the Mother’s vision of Auroville reveals that Auroville as a well-developed unique universal township could render a supreme service to India to emerge as the torch-bearer of hope, nobility and inspiration Sri Aurobindo envisioned for the progress of human civilization.
Keeping this awareness as the background, we embark on the 4th year of ‘Acres for Auroville’ campaign with a will to continue to build on successes of the past. It is said that Auroville is an ongoing success story. This is possible thanks innumerable small success stories within the broader compass. ‘Acres for Auroville’ is one of them. Let us carry forward the story to its conclusion – building a unified land base for the harmonious development of the Auroville Universal Township.
