15th August 2026 – Sri Aurobindo’s Birth Anniversary & the start of Acres for Auroville Year 13!
Today is Sri Aurobindo’s 154th Birthday. But this is only one aspect of the total reality. From another aspect, from another perspective The Mother called Sri Aurobindo’s birth “an Eternal Birth”. When asked to explain what exactly is mean by Eternal Birth, she clarified as follows:
“Physically, it means that the consequences of this birth will last as long as the Earth. The consequences of Sri Aurobindo’s birth will be felt throughout the entire existence of the Earth. And so I called it ‘eternal’, a little poetically.
Mentally, it is a birth the memory of which will last eternally. Through the ages Sri Aurobindo’s birth will be remembered, with all the consequences it has had.
Psychically, it is a birth which will recur eternally, from age to age, in the history of the universe. This birth is a manifestation which takes place periodically, from age to age, in the history of the Earth. That is, the birth itself is renewed, repeated, reproduced, bringing every time perhaps something more – something more complete and perfect – but it is the same movement of descent, of manifestation, of birth in an earthly body.
And finally, from the purely spiritual point of view, it could be said that it is the birth of the Eternal on Earth. For each time the Avatar takes a physical form it is the birth of the Eternal himself on Earth.”
What is true for Sri Aurobindo is, we believe, true for Auroville. Physically, Auroville is 58 – but that is only one aspect of Auroville’s total existence. She (Auroville) has many dimensions. Internally,spiritually, evolutionarilly, Auroville has profound links with the first ray of aspiration, first prayer born in the human heart. For example, there was a city of Akhenaten in Upper Egypt around 1369-75 BC., that is, some 3000 years before the inauguration of Auroville, which had striking similarities with Auroville. An inscription of that city said:
“Here is the place that belongs to no prince, to no god. Nobody owns it.
This is everybody’s place. The earth will find joy in it. Hearts will be happy in it.”
The Mother: “(Akhenaten’s) attempt was premature, for the human mind was not yet ready for it. It had, however, to be undertaken in order to ensure the continuity of its existence on the mental plane.”
Thus, the physical realities of Auroville – the struggles, the successes and failures and delays – are embedded into the larger reality of Auroville, just as Sri Aurobindo’s physical embodiment is embedded in a vaster eternal dimension. We, at Acres for Auroville, too, feel these multiple realities in the phases, evolution and continuity of our work. This understanding and perspective provides the strength to carry on with confidence, as we now launch Year 13 of our unity action for Auroville’s secure and enduring future.
