Dear friends and benefactors of Auroville’s bright future,
As we know, August 15th is not just any day – it is the date of momentous events in the past and, going forward, it will only assume increasing significance. Of course, we say this because it was on this day that Sri Aurobindo was born 150 years ago, and it was on this day that he, at the request of All India Radio, wrote a message outlining his five dreams for India as India stepped into Independence after nearly 200 years of foreign rule. Those five dreams are all related to India, to the world’s future and to human evolution.
Auroville, hosted on the soil of India, is dedicated to realising Sri Aurobindo’s vision of the future, and as such, the physical presence and growth of Auroville on the Earth is meant to be of eternal importance to the world. On the mental level, while trying to be true to its ideals and vision, Auroville will introduce new ideas, ideals, worldviews and visions that will be of lasting value to humankind and help shape its future. On the psychic level, the existence and development of Auroville will pave the way for a sunlit path for humanity. And spiritually, the flowering of Auroville will mean the triumph of the eternal aspiration of the human soul.
It goes without saying that it is a privilege to be in a position to serve and contribute towards the material realisation of Auroville. The ‘Acres for Auroville’ land campaign (A4A) came into being on 15th August 2014, with the aspiration to build the unified land base for Auroville’s harmonious development. Your collaboration and contributions are the fuel that keeps us going. We remain highly appreciative and grateful to you for joining hands with us. In this context, we are pleased to present a 14-page comprehensive report on the A4A campaign – its results and achievements – on the occasion of launching Acres for Auroville Year 9.
1. A4A FLIER – 15th AUGUST 2022
Upon Sri Aurobindo’s passing, The Mother inscribed these words on his Samadhi : “May we never forget even for a moment, all we owe to Thee”. Then, in 1972, The Mother issued this call “Let us all strive to be worthy of Sri Aurobindo’s Centenary”. And now for the 150th anniversary of Sri Aurobindo’s birth, it is we who express our wish, our gratitude, and our aspiration to serve his high dreams, and to help build the City of Dawn. 2. LFAU LETTER – 15TH AUGUST 2022
At the present moment, we, humanity as a whole, are most fortunate because we have access to the light of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. For most people, the future is a big mystery about which they speculate. However, in Sri Aurobindo’s message and teaching, there is no speculation. It is a revelation from deeper realities of world existence – a sunlight shining over the future where things become visible in their truth of things. 3. CREATIVE OFFERINGS FOR THIS SPECIAL 150th YEAR
In this special 150th year, many creative efforts have been made to highlight Sri Aurobindo’s contributions. Here are several very beautiful offerings made by Aurovilians, Ashramites in Puducherry and Delhi and friends abroad to add to the richness of this special year: the eight films by Know Your Rhythm, the Sri Aurobindo’s Gayatri Mantra concert by the Auroville Choir, the online offerings by Auroville Live via AVI-USA, creations by musician-devotee Americo Piaggesi, and the online and live events at La Grace Center. 4. ACRES FOR AUROVILLE – STARTING YEAR 9 OF OUR UNITY ACTION!
On August 15th 2014, the Acres for Auroville land campaign was launched as a collaboration between Lands for Auroville Unified and the worldwide centers of Auroville International. In its eight years, A4A has created awareness of the imperative need to raise funds for land purchase to consolidate Auroville’s designated Master Plan area. 5. ANDRE – STILL SHINING AFTER 54 AUROVILIAN YEARS !
Auroville’s pioneers came from around the world to build the City of Dawn. Several have been filmed, sharing the life-changing inspiration they received from The Mother. Here, we share the recollections of André Hababou of his landmark 1969 meeting with The Mother, which provided the inspiration and energy for his over 50 years of contributions for Auroville. 6. JAGAN – BORN & BRED IN AUROVILLE
Jagan is 22 and was “born and bred” in Auroville. His family has been connected with the City of Dawn for 3 generations now, and his parents became Aurovilians in 1980. In this article, Jagan describes the rich elements of his growing-up – from education to sports to spiritual influences – and his contributions to the community via the “Let’s Talk Trash” ecology action, with NESS School students, and his work at Unity Pavilion for “Art for Land”. 7: ART FOR LAND YEAR 7 – AUGUST 7th till SEPTEMBER 4th 2022
The 7th year of ART FOR LAND, the beautiful support action for Auroville’s land, will be held from August 7th to September 4th at the Unity Pavilion. Now a recognized artistic showcase, the exhibit presents works in all media that have been generously donated by participating artists, with proceeds going to A4A for land purchase. Many inspiring cultural events support the fundraising. 8: EIGHT SPIRITUAL SONNETS BY SRI AUROBINDO
For our August 15th 2022 newsletter, we are pleased to present a selection of eight of Sri Aurobindo’s best-known spiritual sonnets. The sonnets treat a variety of spiritual subjects and experiences with a great depth and precision of description and a parallel beauty of language. Together these elements make reading each sonnet a memorable and life-accompanying experience. The Mother’s 1935 sketch of Sri Aurobindo completes the selection. Please click here for the sonnets.
