The Mother
There is one thing that unites all who come to Auroville. It is aspiration, that seeking for something higher and the possibility of making this something higher a reality. Auroville gives us the opportunity to manifest our individual and collective aspiration for this goal, here, on its physical land, designated for just this purpose. But this role and possibility is not just limited to Auroville’s space – for Auroville is meant to be a place of positive contagion, showing the world what aspiration can bring. To be a spark and beacon for this possibility is the reason for the City of Dawn’s creation and its future.
The Mother said that aspiration is like a flame, a flame that gives inspiration, direction, energy and light … “a flame that rises straight upward”, one “that illumines but does not burn.” A symbolic flame of aspiration is lit at every dawn bonfire held at the Matrimandir – for the New Year, Auroville’s birthday, and on Darshan remembrance days – bringing us together, signaling our shared commitment and our continued collective seeking for the higher new Dawns that our combined aspiration can bring.
A4A is in its 12th solidarity year of raising the funds to consolidate and protect the Master Plan land for Auroville’s City and Greenbelt, and its Matrimandir area.
