24th April – The Day of Certainty
Today, April 24th, we celebrate a pivotal moment in human history: the 106th anniversary of the Mother’s final arrival in Pondicherry in 1920. It was, as she once explained “… the tangible sign of the sure Victory over the adverse forces.”
But like most other things in the Mother’s life, her return to Pondicherry and resuming the collaboration with Sri Aurobindo, was not a mentally chosen decision but rather an action of Consciousness. We grasp this from The Mother’s description of her experience:
“… suddenly everything in me became still; the whole external being was completely immobilized and I had a vision of the Supreme … more beautiful than that of the Gita. A vision of the Supreme. And this vision literally gathered me into its arms; it turned towards the West, towards India, and offered me – and there at the other end I saw Sri Aurobindo. It was … I felt it physically. I saw, saw – my eyes were closed but I saw (twice I have had this vision of the Supreme – once here, much later – but this was the first time) … ineffable. It was as if this Immensity had reduced itself to a rather gigantic Being who lifted me up like a wisp of straw and offered me. Not a word, nothing else, only that….Then everything vanished….
The next day we began preparing to return to India.
It was after this vision, when I returned from Japan, that this meeting with Sri Aurobindo took place, along with the certainty that the Mission would be accomplished.” (Ref. Mother’s Agenda, V.2, Conversation of December 20, 1961)
The Mother’s founding of Auroville is a part of this profound spiritual “certainty”. In the context of our work at Acres for Auroville (A4A), this “certainty” is at the bedrock of our efforts. Just as the Mother’s physical presence in 1920 anchored the new evolutionary force on earth, the consolidation of Auroville’s physical land anchors the lofty ideals that Auroville stands for into the material plane.
As we approach the 60th anniversary of Auroville in 2028, our focus remains on the critical gaps in the Master Plan area – City, Greenbelt, and the land surrounding the Matrimandir and its gardens, its new projected reception area, and its planned lake.
On this day of “Certainty” of victory, we express our sincere thanks for all your collaboration in securing the remaining missing pieces of the planetary undertaking that Auroville is.
