“Soon after arriving at the Ashram in 1968, I cycled into the countryside to see the internationally- heralded city of Auroville, founded on the teachings of Sri Aurobindo. At the site, however, the only evidence of the planned development was a white marble urn emerging from an empty red plain.”
In February 2019, the special 50th anniversary year came to a happy close and Auroville’s 51st year began! We celebrate this landmark transition with a positive news round-up celebrating courage and vision.

Long-time Aurovilian Paulette has been photographing the Matrimandir disk-cleaners for decades. See her album of current cleaners Agni, Lola, & Jolie, and of other “valiant souls” who have cleaned the disks over the years.
“One must have heroism to be a precursor for, generally, men have faith only in what is already accomplished … These words carry great relevance for the manifestation of a new world, and of Auroville!
The Matrimandir is Auroville’s most valued creation, and it is cared for with dedication and courage! The Mother wrote: “Let the Matrimandir be the living symbol of Auroville’s aspiration for the Divine” – “manifesting in a progressive human unity”.
Auroville’s artists along with artist friends from all over the world have come together for the 4th time to raise funds for Auroville’s missing acres. Over 90 artists have donated their original creations in the media of painting, sculpture, pottery, textiles, jewelry, and photography. In an action of flowing generosity, donors make a land contribution and are gifted with an artwork. In addition to the exhibition there is the opening concert and a variety of fundraising events. This is a non-commercial action – all donations go for land purchase within the Master Plan area.
In the early hours of February 28th 2018 – the day of Auroville’s 50th birthday – water from 321 water sources of 77 countries were joined together as a symbol of unity and peace. We are pleased to update you with our work. On completion of the 3-year term of the earlier Land Board, a new team was constituted in May 2018 after comprehensive tests and exercise. The new Land Board team consists of Banumathi, Yuval, Helena and Padmanabhan.
