Today, 102 years ago, a vastly significant event took place from the perspective of the creation of a new world, and a new India – the Mother’s permanent return to Pondicherry. A line from Savitri sums it up: “The united two begun a greater age.” The reference, of course, is to the collaboration between the Mother and Sri Aurobindo that followed her final arrival and went on for the next 30 years. The year 2022 began with the good news of the purchase of 3 new plots of Master Plan land located in Auroville’s Greenbelt! Two of the new plots are located in the Pitchandikulam community nature reserve and one new plot is near Fertile – all three were purchased thanks to land donations. Warm appreciation for these happy events goes to the Land Board, the LFAU team, the many donors, and the land owners who chose to sell their land to Auroville to support the flowering of the City of Dawn!
After discovering Sri Aurobindo, B settled in Auroville in 1974. A non-stop builder of the “inner and outer Auroville” for over 48 years, he’s collaborated on the creation of the Matrimandir structure and Nursery, Verité, the CSR, the International Zone, and Zero Waste Auroville. With humor, B takes us on a review of Auroville’s highs and lows. “To live in Auroville, I knew I had to change inside … to build Auroville as a state of consciousness in myself.”
The Garden of the Unexpected was created for children as “a place of wonder and unexpected learnings” and after three years it is now almost completed. To celebrate this achievement, a set of artwork postcards and stickers depicting the GOU’s flora and fauna is available for sale at the Visitors Center and at www.auroville.com with the proceeds going to A4A. Auroville was founded as a forerunner for and experiment in creating human unity, with Sri Aurobindo’s teachings at its core. To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Sri Aurobindo’s birth, many worldwide friends are highlighting his great contributions to humanity with books and talks that provide clarity and inspiration for our present times, and for the way ahead. Auroville is meant to develop into and emerge as a broad, unique, futuristic, universal township drawing light and inspiration from Sri Aurobindo’s evolutionary vision. It is a double-edged undertaking – with work to be done in the world, in matter – and with work to be done in consciousness, one’s own and the collectivity’s. In this year celebrating Sri Aurobindo’s 150th birth anniversary, we look at Auroville’s relevance to the realisation of the future he envisioned. We are happy to present a historical perspective and the milestones of Auroville’s land consolidation and fundraising over the decades, as compiled by long-time fundraiser, Aryadeep. In it, he pays tribute to the many people – Aurovilians, government officials, eminent leaders – who have contributed their energy and devotion to the cause of Auroville’s land. Donor generosity has always played a major role. With 10% of the City and over 50% of the Green Belt still missing, the task isn’t over!
