15th August 2014 – 15th August 2024

On the morning of 15th August 2014, about twenty people gathered in the mini-conference room on the first floor of the Town Hall building in Auroville. The purpose of that small gathering was to launch, on Sri Aurobindo’s birthday, a special campaign called Acres for Auroville (A4A), a joint collaboration of LFAU and the international centers of Auroville International. Among the supporters and well-wishers that were present were early settlers like Frederick and Alain Grandcolas. The late Thiru Mahalingam, representing the elder generation of Auroville, and Sindhuja, representing the youth of Auroville, cut the Inauguration ribbon.

A decade has passed since that launch. Looking back, the campaign has proved its relevance, and its usefulness. A total of 181 new acres of land, both in the planned City area and the Greenbelt have been financed by the combined fundraising actions of Acres for Auroville, LFAU, and the GreenAcres campaign.

A beautiful A4A action is the Art for Land Exhibition & Fundraiser led in conjunction with the team at Auroville’s Unity Pavilion. Hundreds of artists have donated their precious works to be sold as resources for Auroville’s needed land consolidation. We have also held inspiring events such as “Landing Auroville”. Donations from supporting runners “For the Land” in Auroville Marathons have added to our resources. Books and products have been created whose proceeds are dedicated for A4A.

Our annual land fundraisers New Year’s cards are seen on desks throughout Auroville as started in A4A Year 2. Side by side, we launched our quarterly newsletter which along with land consolidation updates present the lives, work, contributions, and aspirations of newcomers and long-term residents of Auroville, while highlighting the international nature of the Township. On a number of occasions, Auroville Today has published news, updates, and articles on the campaign and even re-printed content from our newsletter, as have many of the centers of Auroville International.

Acres for Auroville has been recognized and appreciated by Dr. Karan Singh, former chairman of the Governing Board of the Auroville Foundation. It has received encouraging mention in a message to Auroville by the International Advisory Council then chaired by Sir Marc Tully.

While our team is divided between France and Auroville, we have not felt any impediment of distance in our daily work thanks to our shared vision and commitment. Carried on the wings of conscience that to safeguard the planned Auroville area is a primary task for the emergence of a city that can be the Pole Star for India and the world, we intend to carry it forward as long as needed. We sincerely thank all those who have donated, supported and collaborated with us over the past ten years. We hope you will stay with us as we begin our eleventh year of service for Auroville. Together, we serve the future of peace and hope and the effort for better things in the world. Along with Jothi and Sigrid, we thank you!

With trust in Auroville’s bright future,
