A Dream Blossoms

It all began in 2018, during the celebrations of Auroville’s 50th Anniversary.

A small group of flower lovers in Auroville came together with a simple yet profound aspiration—to offer something beautiful to the One who had awakened in countless hearts a deep love for flowers and revealed their hidden spiritual significance: The Mother.

Their offering took the form of the Divine Flowers Exhibition, held at Savitri Bhavan during the Auroville Week of 21st  Feb to 28th  Feb and   later on, on Sri Aurobindo’s Birthday.

The choice of Savitri Bhavan was itself deeply symbolic. Dedicated to Sri Aurobindo’s epic, Savitri, the space carries a unique atmosphere of peace, beauty and aspiration. Visitors entering the exhibition often felt transported into another world—a world of harmony, fragrance and quiet joy, reminiscent of the luminous realms described in Savitri.

From an Exhibition to a Living Dream

Year after year, the exhibition grew—not merely in size, but in spirit.

The response from the community was overwhelming. People eagerly awaited the exhibition each year, returning again and again to experience the beauty, peace and quiet joy that flowers so naturally evoke.

Gradually, a deeper aspiration emerged.

Many within the team and the wider community began asking:

“Why should this beauty exist for only a few days each year? Why not create a place where it can live permanently—a sanctuary open every day for everyone?”

From this collective aspiration, a remarkable vision was born: The Mother’s Flower Garden—a garden that would one day bring together all 898 flowers to which The Mother had given spiritual significance.

Encouraged by Narad, Richard, Kailash-ben, Shraddhavan, Kiran-di, Lipi-di, and Manoj-bhai, the team began transforming this dream into reality.

A proposal was prepared and submitted to Auroville’s Town Development Council (ATDC). Working closely with the committee over many months, the team developed the vision in detail until, in August 2022, the project received approval and a beautiful parcel of land adjoining Solar Kitchen was allotted for the garden.

 

The plants are very psychic, but they can express it only by silence and beauty.

The Journey Begins

On the auspicious occasion of The Mother’s Birth Anniversary, 21 February 2023, The Mother’s Flower Garden was formally inaugurated.

Its vision is extraordinary.

The completed project will bring together all 898 flowers to which The Mother has given spiritual significance, thoughtfully arranged within twelve gardens, each representing one of the twelve chapters of book Spiritual Significance of Flowers.

Yet the vision extends far beyond the gardens themselves. It embraces a complete learning and experience centre designed to welcome, inspire and serve visitors from around the world.

The project includes a reception and visitor information centre; an exhibition hall presenting flower paintings, the messages and spiritual significance of flowers given by The Mother, together with the story and vision of the garden; a meditation room; a children’s activity room; volunteer accommodation; and a caretaker’s residence.

A guest house will help make the project financially sustainable while offering visitors the opportunity to stay for a few days, immerse themselves in the peaceful atmosphere, and experience a deeper connection with flowers and nature.

The vision also includes a flower and gardening outlet, where visitors will be able to obtain seeds, plants, flower-related publications, handcrafted products, gardening tools, and other items that support the garden’s educational and sustainability initiatives.

The garden is also envisioned as a model of sustainability, following organic cultivation methods, conserving water, recycling resources, incorporating rainwater harvesting, and embracing other environmentally responsible practices.

During the initial phases, approximately 75–80% of the flowering plants suitable to Auroville’s climate will be cultivated in the open gardens, while species requiring special care will eventually be nurtured within dedicated greenhouses.

Flowers lovingly grown here will be offered to Matrimandir, Savitri Bhavan, Bharat Nivas, and many other community spaces, especially during important occasions and celebrations.

When the Land Began to Respond

In the early days, a simple keeth hut became the heart of the project.

Around it, the first temporary garden slowly began to take shape.

As planting continued, something remarkable became evident.

Almost every plant flourished with extraordinary vigour.

It was as though the land itself had been patiently waiting for this moment, ready to reveal a hidden beauty that had quietly rested beneath its surface for years.

Soon, flower lovers from across Auroville joined in planting saplings, creating daily flower decorations and lovingly caring for the growing garden.

School children began visiting regularly, discovering not only the beauty of flowers but also learning about nature, ecology and the spiritual significance that flowers carry in The Mother’s teachings.

A Living Community Takes Root

As the flowers blossomed, so too did an entirely new community.

Butterflies—The Mother’s “conscious flowers of the air”—appeared in astonishing numbers and diversity, attracting naturalists and butterfly enthusiasts who came to observe and study them.

Sunday mornings became filled with the sacred vibrations of Bhagavad Gita chanting.

Full Moon evenings transformed the garden into a place of quiet wonder, where moonlight bathed the flowers and musical offerings created an atmosphere of peace and devotion.

Throughout the year, especially during the birthdays of The Mother, Sri Aurobindo, and Auroville, the garden hosted talks, cultural programmes and musical performances by people deeply connected with Their work.

 

 

 

 

 

Visitors began arriving not only from Auroville and different parts of India, but increasingly from around the world.

Some came simply to experience the atmosphere. Others came to volunteer, to contribute their skills, or to support the vision in whatever way they could.

All were united by one shared aspiration—to one day walk through the living chapters of Spiritual Significance of Flowers, experiencing directly what previously could only be read in a book.

Designing a Garden Like No Other

While the temporary garden continued to flourish, another important journey was unfolding behind the scenes.

Together with the landscape architects of Ovoid Atelier, the core team spent nearly two years carefully designing every aspect of the permanent gardens.

Each plant has its own unique requirements of sunlight, water, soil, growth pattern and visual harmony.

Bringing together all 898 flowers in one place required meticulous planning, careful study and thoughtful design.

The result will be something truly unprecedented—not only in Auroville, but perhaps anywhere in the world: a living sanctuary where every flower to which The Mother gave a spiritual significance will find its rightful home.

The First Step Towards the Complete Vision

Because of its scale and ambition, The Mother’s Flower Garden is being developed in carefully planned phases.

The first milestone is Garden No. 6 – Bases of Spiritual Life, envisioned as the prototype for the eleven gardens that will follow.

 

Over the course of a year, generous well-wishers from India and around the world helped raise the funds needed to begin construction.

Their trust, generosity and encouragement transformed a cherished aspiration into living reality.

 

Construction officially commenced on 24 April 2026 and is expected to be completed by October 2026.

The entire team eagerly awaits the day when visitors will walk through this first completed formal garden and experience the peace, beauty and inspiration it has been lovingly created to offer.

More Than a Garden

Over the past eight years, something far greater than a beautiful garden has emerged.

A living community has formed.

Friendships have blossomed.

People from different countries, cultures, professions and generations have come together through one shared language—the language of flowers.

In a world often marked by division and uncertainty, The Mother’s Flower Garden quietly demonstrates another possibility.

It reminds us that beauty has the power to unite.

That nature can heal.

That collective aspiration can accomplish what once seemed impossible.

And that when work is offered with sincerity and love, it becomes a form of prayer.

Today, the garden continues to grow—rooted in love for flowers, love for Nature, love for humanity, and above all, love for the Divine.

Every flower planted, every pathway built, every volunteer who offers time, every donor who contributes, and every visitor who walks through the garden becomes part of this unfolding story.

This extraordinary journey has only been possible through the Grace of The Mother and Sri Aurobindo, and through the selfless dedication of countless volunteers, well-wishers, donors, friends and visitors who have offered their time, skills, resources and love.

With hearts full of gratitude, we look forward to the complete manifestation of this unique vision—a place where flowers become bridges between Nature and the soul; where beauty awakens consciousness; where learning, service and inner growth blossom together; and where people from every corner of the world are united in a shared offering of love.

The Mother’s Flower Garden is more than a garden. It is a living prayer—a growing expression of beauty, harmony and collective aspiration, reminding us that even the smallest flower has the power to awaken the deepest truth within the human heart.
