Dear friends of Auroville’s bright future,

58 years have passed since the momentous morning of 28th February 1968 when youth representing 124 countries took part in the inauguration of a new city dedicated to the future … a city that is meant to be a bridge between the best of the past and the best of the future. Such a unique bridge can be built by cultivating the will for unending education and the spirit of youthfulness, multi-fold research and constant progress. For the Mother, will is a power of consciousness turned towards manifestation.

To build the will – like one builds the muscles of the body, and then to orient it towards the aims and aspirations of Auroville – is a psychological task before Aurovilians and friends of Auroville. However, physically, land is the bridge for the vision of Auroville to incarnate in matter. This is the aspiration and goal of Acres for Auroville.

In our August 2025 newsletter, we announced 187.14 new acres of Master Plan land registered. In our November 2025 newsletter, we announced 45 acres more, making 232.14 registered, and now, in February 2026, we can announce that another 42.42 more plots of land have been registered in the name of the Auroville Foundation bringing the total to 274.56 acres to date. Of these 42.42 new acres, 35.28 constitute Gift Deeds (transferring ownership titles from the names of consenting Aurovilians to the name of the Auroville Foundation) and another 7.14 acres have been added to the Master Plan by way of exchanges of outlying land.

In this issue of our newsletter, we begin by presenting our A4A Flier and LFAU Letter, followed by sharing the life paths of two Aurovilians – Toby from The Netherlands, and of AgniJata (Katia) from Russia – and what led them to settle, stay and contribute to Auroville.

Today, on Auroville’s birthday, we are initiating a new series – ‘ A Conversation with an Artist’ – and are pleased to inaugurate it with an article by Auroville pioneer and internationally recognized artist, Pierre Legrand. And as we have just commenced a beautiful new Art For Land exhibition – ‘The Golden Light’ – our associated article presents the ‘Sunlit Path’ vision, works and participating artists behind it. As usual, we end with Inspiring quotes – this time we share the forty years of New Year messages of the Mother.

1. The Acres for Auroville Flier – 28th February 2026
Auroville was created to manifest the ideal of human unity. However, the unity we seek is not automatic – we are each unique manifestations and experience things differently. Plus, with our many layers of consciousness, we don’t always have unity and harmony even inside ourselves. Yet, there are times when we achieve a deep, uplifting oneness and harmony within and all together. For, as The Mother has said, ‘There is a deep and true consciousness in which all can meet in love and harmony’. 2. LFAU Letter – 28th February 2026
58 years ago, Auroville commenced her journey. But the idea, the formation of “an ideal city” was in the background for much of the Mother’s life. As early as the 1930s, and even before she came to India and met Sri Aurobindo, she had the dream of founding a new city. And then the idea of the project lapsed. In her 1965 talk on the return of the idea, the striking point for our land consolidation work is that it was “the place” – the availability of land and the possibility to develop it – “that caused the formation to be born”. 3. Connecting the Dots – by Toby
Toby came into contact with Sri Aurobindo & The Mother as a teenager in the Netherlands and quickly became involved with the Sri Aurobindo Auroville Society and Auroville International Netherlands. From that early point on, his life path was made of a series of significant points which finally connected and found their meaning when he settled in Auroville in 2006. His professional career as a CEO in Finance and with Dutch water companies gave him skills that he now brings to Auroville’s town planning and water service groups. He sees Auroville as ‘a spiritual creation’ whose elements ‘have a spiritual place and meaning’.

4. Auroville: Welcome to Conscious Evolution! – by AgniJata (Katia)
AgniJata (Katia) came to Auroville from Russia with her two children and has been an Aurovilian for the past 20 years. She writes: ‘Auroville for me is the place of intense growth and transformation in the loving hands of the Divine Mother. The challenging and interesting process of inner growth here is reflected in the fast changes in matter. I came here in 2004 to participate in this divine-human-material experiment and I have never been disappointed. It was hard, even painful sometimes, but each time the light found behind the darkness confirmed that this is the right choice for me – to be an Aurovilian.’

5. A Conversation with Pierre Legrand
We are very pleased to start our Art for Land series of articles ‘A Conversation with an Artist’ with this sharing by Auroville artist Pierre Legrand. In it, Pierre presents his unique path of creation, intersecting art with the spiritual. Starting with his creative tinkerings as a child, through his studies in Paris, his exhibitions in Europe and India, Pierre provides insights into his artistic research including the invention of his ‘alphabet’ and his discovery of ‘the little things’. The past year has been one of an unexpected harvest in his evolving creative sea. Speaking about his voyage he says : ‘The first image which comes to my mind is that of Colombus in the middle of the Atlantic being asked about his journey. What could he say?

6. Art For Land’s New Exhibition – ‘The Golden Light’
Art for Land (A4L) has been an inspiring expression of Auroville creativity at the service of the Auroville dream since its start in 2016 as a support action for Auroville’s needed land consolidation. It has become a respected showcase for the works of Auroville artists and friends of Auroville. Our new Art For Land exhibition ‘The Golden Light’ radiates this spirit, bringing together creative works across diverse media in which the golden light shines and inspires, along with profound artistic interpretations of Savitri. 7. Inspiring Quotes – The Mother’s New Year Messages
The Mother’s New Year messages provide a sense of what is at stake with each new annual cycle. Here is a compilation of all of The Mother’s messages that she gave over the 40 years from 1933 till 1973. They are messages of guidance and direction in general, but they are also revealing in the context of the historical happenings at every new date. In 1933, the beginnings of the upcoming new World War were taking shape. Her messages in the 1940’s, ‘50s and ’60’s are in the context of the deep changes in world power relations and the menace of new wars. Her words remind us of the rôle that we humans hold and the need for our consecration and sincerity.
