Dear friend of Auroville’s bright future,
152 years ago, on 15th August 1872, Sri Aurobindo – the harbinger of a new age, a new world and a more evolved spiritualized humanity – was born. Auroville is meant to serve and hasten the realisation of his evolutionary vision.
On 15th August 2014, one decade ago, we launched the Acres for Auroville (A4A) land campaign to help complete the consolidation of Auroville’s physical base by raising the funds needed for this essential goal – and our collaborative efforts are its only source of funding. We are happy to report that thanks to the generosity of many hundreds of supporters, 181 once-missing acres have been acquired to date and have joined Auroville!
This August 15th bulletin is rich with inspirational content supporting the goals and purpose of Auroville: our A4A Flier presents extracts from the Mother referring to the new world with absolute certitude of its realisation and what is expected of us, and our Quotes article enriches our understanding.
Our LFAU letter reviews our work and journey of the last 10 years, and presents its accomplishments, followed by a photo album of landmark moments in our land fundraising work.
As has been our practice, each issue of our newsletter carries the stories of Aurovilians – their inspirations, dreams and contributions to the growth of Auroville. This time, we are very pleased to share two exceptional stories of aspiration and creation. The first – by Auroville pioneer Paulette Hadnagy – presents her road to Auroville in the context of a deep soul seeking and the dramatic upheavals of 20th Century history (Part 1 of two parts). The second is the fascinating story of Svaram (Sanskrit for the word Sound) by its founder-director Aurelio and its extraordinary creative work for culture, education, unity, beauty, and healing.
We are also happy to announce the launch of the new Art for Land Exhibition at the Unity Pavilion from 15th August onward. We sincerely thank Jaya, Doris, and Sangha in particular, the AFL team, and all the contributing artists for their generosity! A special part of the exhibition is a tribute to the late Kratu, artist and longtime Aurovilian.
Our journey of the last decade has been meaningful, but with 62 acres in the City and 1421 acres in the Greenbelt, our work is not finished! So we look forward to equally meaningful times ahead with your goodwill and collaboration. We thank you all very sincerely for being part of this journey with us!

Auroville was founded by The Mother to give a physical base for Sri Aurobindo’s great vision of a humanity growing towards unity and spirituality. “We are witnessing the birth of a New World”, The Mother declared, “a reality which is being worked out now.” Stating that this new world is “the truth of tomorrow, inevitable, which must necessarily come”, she invited us to collaborate in the adventure and do all “with this great truth as the background, as a constant support”. 2. LFAU Letter – 15th August 2024
On the morning of 15th August 2014, on Sri Aurobindo’s birthday, about twenty people gathered in Auroville’s Town Hall to launch a special campaign called Acres for Auroville (A4A), a joint collaboration of LFAU and the international centers of Auroville International. A decade has passed since that launch and thanks to the enthusiasm, work, and collaboration of donors, artists, friends and supporters, the campaign has come to play a central role in Auroville’s vital land consolidation. 3. Album – 10 Years of the Acres for Auroville Land Campaign
Acres for Auroville (A4A) was started on 15th August 2014 as a unity action for Auroville’s still-missing land. The Mother issued a message in 1970, calling on us all to contribute to support this vital need of land consolidation, and A4A is dedicated to raising both awareness and the needed funds. Our many support actions and your solidarity over the past ten years have enabled the addition of 181 once-missing City and Greenbelt acres. 4. Paulette – The Avatar’s One Family
Paulette Hadnagy was born in Italy of French and Hungarian parents. Her young life was marked by the devastation of World War 2 and her generation’s quest for unity and meaning. The discovery of Sri Aurobindo led her to her travel overland and alone to India, reaching the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in 1973. Living and working with the sadhaks there, she also started cycling to Auroville to participate in the monthly non-stop concreting on the roof of Matrimandir, and finally in 1985, she settled in Auroville. 5. Svaram – A Sound Journey of Creativity and Collaboration
SVARAM started as an educational and cultural project launched by Aurovilian Aurelio who recognized the great talent of local children and the richness of the bioregion’s cultural heritage. From that origin, SVARAM has been honored by the UN initiative ‘Music as a Natural Resource’ and is the producer of over a hundred types of traditional and innovative instruments, exported to over 36 countries, all produced by its trained work force of over 80 team members. It is now also a recognized training and research center into music and the healing effects of sound. Based on Aurelio’s decades of studies and the group’s dynamic collective work, SVARAM offers online and residential courses on music for integral well-being and health. In line with the Mother’s words on Unity and Harmony, SVARAM’s motto is “Bringing the joy of music and the magic touch of sound into everyone’s heart and hands” – which it does with extraordinary energy and inspiring creativity.

6: Art for Land – New 15th August Exhibition
ART FOR LAND is a beautful action for Auroville’s land held at Auroville’s Unity Pavilion and now in its 9th year, Original artworks are donated by Auroville and friend artists whose sales proceeds go to the Acres for Auroville campaign for the consolidation of Auroville’s designated Master Plan area. This newest exhibition is organized on the theme of Unity, Kindness and Friendship and features works by 16 Auroville artists. In loving memory of Kratu, there is a special tribute exhibition showcasing his works that he generously donated to AFL. 6: Inspiring Quotes: Certitude, Faithfulness, Transformation, Victory
Many important messages were given by The Mother with her comments on the spiritual significance of flowers. In our A4A Flier, we quoted The Mother on certitude, transformation, and the spiritual victory that is happening and assured. Here we share more of what The Mother and Sri Aurobindo said about these qualities.
