In July 2018, The Matrimandir Executive team announced an open international competition to create the Garden of the Unexpected (GOU) within the Matrimandir Oval Area. The Brief was to create a garden for children as an “initiatory place, not an ordinary playground, but a place of wonder and unexpected learnings.”

The Unexpected Four team, consisting of Andreas Bickford and Greg Burgess (from Australia) with Joss Brooks and Mona Doctor-Pingel from Auroville won the competition and were given the task of executing the gardens from 21 February 2019.

Along with Madhivanan G. as part of the team, and many technicians and skilled workers from the Matrimandir team, they have almost finished the GOU which is an ensemble of 4 sections spread over 2 acres and aptly named Birth, Adolescence, Youthfulness and Eternal Child.

As an initiative to contribute towards Auroville’s land campaign and create awareness about the project, the team at Studio Naqshbandi under Mona have designed a set of digital artworks of 2 postcards and 6 stickers depicting different elements, flora and fauna, from the GOU:
