February 29, 1956 – the beginning of a new world!
On 29 th February, 1956, as per the Mother’s experience, the universal descent of the supramental
consciousness took place. That was the beginning… the beginning of a new world. Referring to it, the Mother wrote a note with the heading, “The First Manifestation of the Supramental”. The word “First” signifies that this will be followed by further manifestations of the layers or the splendours of the supramental consciousness.
One of the images that comes to mind is that of a traveller in a train watching the scene outside. The outside scenes are all mixed, sometime light, sometimes dark, sometime beautiful, sometime ugly. Then, more light, more beautiful scenes. Gradually the journey enters into a new geography, a new orbit, a new terroir where there is no more darkness and ugliness, only movement from wonder to greater wonder, from splendour to greater splendour.
Past spiritual traditions never spoke of the possibility of “constant progress” because they did not have the experience of the supramental. As the Mother explains in one of her talks, the religions of the world have their origin in the overmind plane where each aspect of Truth presents itself as an independent force. But with the descent of the supramental force on 29 th February 1956, the force of “constant progress” within the foundation of unity had been set in motion.
The ideal of “constant progress” mentioned in the charter of Auroville has to be understood in this context. Similarly, another ideal of Auroville, namely, “a living embodiment of an actual human unity”, too, has to be understood in this greater context. By “a living embodiment of an actual human unity”, the Mother is not referring to ethical or idealistic unity, not even to the unity of emotions and sentiments, though these could well be the beginning and the stepping stones.
She is referring to the reality of supramental consciousness because unity and oneness are the very foundation of the supramental. Without getting separated from that foundation, life flowers in myriad directions of greater wonder and greater splendour.
Sri Aurobindo: “Earth-life is one self-chosen habitation of a great Divinity and his aeonic will is to change it from a blind prison into his splendid mansion and high heaven-reaching temple.”
Our quest for a unified base of Auroville is basically a quest to provide a cohesive experimental ground for the ideals of Auroville to become realised facts.
