INSPIRING QUOTES FROM SRI AUROBINDO & THE MOTHER
THE FLAME OF LOVE & ONENESS
Inspiring Quotes – The Flame of Love & Oneness.pdf

The Mother made the connection between the inner flame, love, unity, and our purpose in the world. Here is a selection from these inspiring quotes which she communicated in messages to disciples and seekers, written in her own personal writngs, “Prayers & Meditations” and recorded in the Agenda. They are follwed by the deeply moving section from Sri Aurobindo’s “Savitri” :
“Built is the golden tower, the Flame-Child born”.
From The Mother’s Prayers & Meditations:
Like a flame that burns in silence, like a perfume that rises straight upward without wavering , my love goes to Thee; and like the child who does not reason and has no care, I trust myself to Thee that Thy Will may be done, that Thy Light may manifest, Thy Peace radiate, Thy Love cover the world.
*******************
O Lord! Kindle in us the Flame of Love which will burn out all resistance and make us fit to be
Thy faithful servants.
*******************
Grant, I implore Thee, that all in my being may be identified with Thee. May I be nothing else
any more than a flame of Love utterly awakened to a supreme realisation of Thee.
*******************
Accept the ardent flame of my gratitude and my joyous and fully confident adherence.
******************
O Love, divine Love, spread abroad in the world, regenerate life, enlighten the intelligence, break
the barriers of egoism, scatter the obstacles of ignorance, shine resplendent as sovereign Master
of the earth.
*******************
To live in love, by love, for love, indissolubly united to Thy highest manifestation …. Always more
light, more beauty, more truth!
*******************
A deep and solemn chant, smiling and subtle, rises from my heart, and I do not know whether this
chant goes from me to Thee or comes from Thee to me or whether Thou and I and the entire
universe are this marvellous chant of which I have just become conscious…. Surely there is no
longer any Thou or I or any separate universe; only an immense harmony is there, sublime and
infinite, which is all things and of which all things will one day grow aware. It is the harmony of
boundless Love, Love victorious over all suffering and all obscurity. By this law of Love, Thy law, I
want to live more and more integrally; to it unreservedly I give myself. And all my being exults in
an inexpressible Peace.
********************
O Divine Master, grant that today may bring to us a completer consecration to Thy Will, a more
integral gift of ourselves to Thy work, a more total forgetfulness of self, a greater illumination, a
purer love. Grant that in a communion growing ever deeper, more constant and entire, we may be
united always more and more closely to Thee and become Thy servitors worthy of Thee. Remove
from us all egoism, root out all petty vanity, greed and obscurity.
May we be all ablaze with Thy divine Love; make us Thy torches in the world.
********************
O Lord, grant that this collective convention of the ending year be for us also the occasion to put an
end to a whole lot of bonds and attachments, illusions and weaknesses which have no longer any
purpose in our lives. At every moment we must shake off the past like falling dust, that it may not
soil the virgin path which, at every moment also, is opening before us.
May our mistakes, acknowledged and rectified within us, be no more than vain mirages powerless
to bring any consequences and, pressing our foot down firmly upon all that no longer should exist,
on all ignorance, all obscurity, all egoism, may we take our flight boldly towards wider horizons
and intenser light, a more perfect compassion, a more disinterested love ….
*********************
Teach us always more, give us more light, dispel our ignorance, illumine our minds, transfigure our
hearts. And give us the Love that never runs dry, and makes Thy sweet law flower in every being.
*********************
O Lord, I cry unto Thee: make me a burning brazier which consumes all suffering and transforms
it into joyous light irradiating the hearts of all!… Grant my prayer: Transform me into a brazier of
pure love and boundless compassion.
**********************
… the law of divine love, the purest expression of what we can conceive of Thee, must be realised
more and more upon earth and triumph over all ignorant egoism; we must become more and more
perfectly the faithful servitors of that power of love and light, we must live in it, by it; that alone
must live and act in us.

Messages to Spiritual Seekers
From “The Agenda” Volume 6 – July 10, 1965 :
Only, the Flame must be there – the Flame within, the flame of aspiration and the flame of
faith; …There is only one thing: a sort of flame – a sort of flame that burns all this falsehood.
***********************
From “Words of The Mother” Volume 2 – 7 November 1954 :
The flame of the aspiration must be so straight and so ardent that no obstacle can dissolve it.

From ” The Supreme Discovery” – 28 April 1912:
… that which is at the centre of our being, That which is our life and our light. This idea, expressed in sublime words, has been taught in various forms by all the great Instructors in all lands and all ages. The Self of each one and the great universal Self are one. The ancient traditions rightly said: “Our origin and ourselves, our God and ourselves are one.” And this oneness should not be understood merely as a more or less close and intimate relationship of union, but as a true identity. … That is why we must express that sublime thought, creatrix of the material worlds, and make known to all the word that fills the heavens and the earth, “I am in all things and all beings.”
When all shall know this, the promised day of great transfigurations will be at hand. When in each atom of Matter men shall recognise the indwelling thought of God, when in each living creature they shall perceive some hint of a gesture of God, when each man can see God in his brother, then dawn will break, dispelling the darkness, the falsehood, the ignorance, the error and suffering that weigh upon all Nature. This indeed is the central thought epitomising all others, the thought which should be ever present to our remembrance as the sun that illumines all life.
That is why I remind you of it today. For if we follow our path bearing this thought in our hearts like the rarest jewel, the most precious treasure, if we allow it to do its work of illumination and transfiguration within us, we shall know that it lives in the centre of all beings and all things, and in it we shall feel the marvellous oneness of the universe.
Then we shall understand the vanity and childishness of our meagre satisfactions, our foolish quarrels, our petty passions, our blind indignations. We shall see the dissolution of our little faults, the crumbling of the last entrenchments of our limited personality and our obtuse egoism. We shall feel ourselves being swept along by this sublime current of true spirituality which will deliver us from our narrow limits and bounds. The individual Self and the universal Self are one; in every world, in every being, in every thing, in every atom is the Divine Presence, and man’s mission is to manifest it.
This is the attitude of true, conscious and discerning love, the love which knows how to see behind appearances, understand in spite of words, and which, amid all obstacles, is in constant communion with the depths, … this great, this sublime and divine love bending over us from the innermost depths of our being, bearing with our weaknesses, rectifying our errors.… let us allow ourselves to be penetrated and transformed by this Divine Love; let us offer Him, without reserve, this marvellous instrument, our physical organism. He shall make it yield its utmost on every plane of activity. To achieve this total self-consecration, all means are good, all methods have their value. The one thing needful is to persevere in our will to attain this goal. For then everything we study, every action we perform, every human being we meet, all come to bring us an indication, a help, a light to guide us on the path.

From “Savitri”, by Sri Aurobindo (Book 5 pp 701- 702)
Thou shalt not shrink from any brother soul.
Thou shalt be attracted helplessly to all.
Men seeing thee shall feel my hands of joy,
In sorrow’s pangs feel steps of the world’s delight,
Their life experience its tumultuous shock
In the mutual craving of two opposites.
Hearts touched by thy love shall answer to my call,
Discover the ancient music of the spheres
In the revealing accents of thy voice
And nearer draw to me because thou art:
Enamoured of thy spirit’s loveliness
They shall embrace my body in thy soul,
Hear in thy life the beauty of my laugh,
Know the thrilled bliss with which I made the worlds.
All that thou hast, shall be for others’ bliss,
All that thou art, shall to my hands belong.
I will pour delight from thee as from a jar,
I will whirl thee as my chariot through the ways,
I will use thee as my sword and as my lyre,
I will play on thee my minstrelsies of thought.
And when thou art vibrant with all ecstasy,
And when thou liv’st one spirit with all things,
Then will I spare thee not my living fires,
But make thee a channel for my timeless force.
My hidden presence led thee unknowing on
From thy beginning in earth’s voiceless bosom
Through life and pain and time and will and death,
Through outer shocks and inner silences
Along the mystic roads of Space and Time
To the experience which all Nature hides.
Who hunts and seizes me, my captive grows:
This shalt thou henceforth learn from thy heart-beats.
For ever love, O beautiful slave of God!
O lasso of my rapture’s widening noose,
Become my cord of universal love.
The spirit ensnared by thee force to delight
Of creation’s oneness sweet and fathomless,
Compelled to embrace my myriad unities
And all my endless forms and divine souls.
O Mind, grow full of the eternal peace;
O Word, cry out the immortal litany:
Built is the golden tower, the flame-child born.
