Auroville: Welcome to Conscious Evolution!
by AgniJata (Katia)

My life in Auroville began in 2004, but the path to it started earlier.
In 1995, while still in Russia, I went through an existential crisis. It had nothing to do with politics, economy or national affairs. Rather it was a moment when fate serves you everything you could possibly want in the material world on a silver platter with a golden rim, and yet, for some reason, the light goes out. I was searching for a way out, but the darkness only grew deeper. I found myself at rock bottom.
Everyone has their own “bottom”; mine was perhaps not the worst. With a degree in computer science, I was sewing ballet shoes in a theater workshop in St. Petersburg. My children were with me, and in the neighboring apartment lived my mother and grandmother, always ready to help and support us. But for me, rock-bottom in the heart.
Then, in 2001, I met a person whose heart was burning with light. As it later turned out, this light was the light of The Mother. He was planning to go to Auroville. Without hesitation, I followed him—there were no doubts. It was 2002—our first visit to Auroville. It took us only two years to get ready and arrive here as Newcomers in 2004.
The difficulties began almost immediately. There was no rigidity or clear-cut certainty here; again and again, the simplest tasks failed to find solutions. Everything was flexible, fluid, and very human.
One had to change one’s worldview on the go: the study of Integral Yoga theory and the idealistic ideas of how things “should” be, gave way to practice. Nothing that did not come from the heart happened here—or else it met difficulties, obstacles. Doors would close, as if each time provoking a person to search for light and openness!
During that time, conversations with old Aurovilians helped me greatly. In short, this is what they taught me:
“If something doesn’t work out, relax, offer everything to The Mother, give time and space for what should happen in the best possible way. Perhaps that door is simply not ready to open, or you just don’t see the door that is open nearby.”
“If there is a conflict, do not take it personally. It simply points to a falsehood, a problem that needs to be resolved. This principle applies to absolutely everything that happens in life—relationships, events, situations, even accidents.”
Simple things, but for me they became fundamental.
As for how we lived: the children went to Transition school. I worked first as a school co-administrator in the same school.

As Auroville provides opportunities for growth and exploration of our talents and creativity—and contribution—I branched out into other activities. I became a designer of silk accessories, of websites, and of catalogs at Auromode.

And then I went freelance and created “AgniJata—Educational Toys”, releasing around 20 cut-out activity albums for children during 16 years if its existence, it is still active.
Remembering my childhood activities, I joined a group of the musicians as a percussionist:

From 2010 to 2023, I led a team of industrial climbers who cleaned the Matrimandir discs.

And from 2021 to the present day, I have been working as a co-editor and layout designer for the Auroville newspaper News and Notes.

After 22 years, what is Auroville for me?
Auroville is, in a way, a Petri dish (Louis Pasteur’s dish—a vessel with nutrient broth used to study microorganisms), only instead of bacteria there is a community of people, instead of the soup—the powerful energy of the place, and the invisible presence of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, all of which make the process intense and effective.
All the problems present in the so-called “outer world” are gathered here—like in Noah’s Ark, two of every kind. Aurovilians are subject to the same flaws as humanity at large, with one crucial difference: here, flaws and problems are tasks to be resolved on the level of inner transformation. Living through them, consenting to them, seeing and becoming conscious of them leads to complete healing and transformation. A person who carries such an experience transmits healing to their immediate circle, and then, chain by chain, this experience spreads to all of humanity, gradually eradicating falsehood in specific points, according to the tasks resolved.
Why Auroville, when evolutionary processes are happening all over the Earth? Because Auroville is ahead of the curve. Like a Petri dish, it provides ideal conditions for accelerated transformation.
The speed of living through difficulties, finding solutions, discovering inner resources, and transforming is many times faster here than in the outer world.
The Mother and Sri Aurobindo are undoubtedly the founders and pioneers of Integral Yoga. And the same force that worked through them works through each of us. The degree of our openness to this force determines the quality, speed, and painlessness of transformation for each individual.
As the Earth’s vibrations rise and evolution unfolds, Integral Yoga itself renews—new colors, possibilities, discoveries, simplifications, and accelerations emerge. What was difficult for a body born in 1950 comes easily to someone born in 2000, whose body is already prepared for the next turn of evolutionary tasks.
It is crucial at every moment to align one’s outer actions with the intention embedded within them. Even the simplest gesture of goodwill, on the material plane, can—depending on the intention—turn into an egoistic parody. This later complicates the task and worsens life circumstances, up to illness, accidents, losses, and more. These are basic truths, yet without them I cannot imagine life in Auroville. This is what the older Aurovilians taught me when I first came to Auroville in 2002 to look, and in 2004, to stay forever.
The outer processes happening to a person are a kind of theater—sets and actors arranged by Agni (the consciousness that moves the matter of the universe) for the greatest benefit of all the participants. Divine Consciousness can weave millions of threads and involve billions of participants so that each receives the most effective experience for development, evolution, and transformation. Understanding this, we find the key to all the doors of our being. The key is one, but the process is long and continuous—gradually clearing away layers of falsehood and unconsciousness and leading us toward light, perfection, and ourselves: the human being renewed again and again, each time moving another half-micron closer to the New Human, the Supramental.
For me, this is not an illusion. This is precisely why I live in Auroville. Human joys and discoveries, pleasures, creativity, and insights are side effects of this process—which undoubtedly makes Integral Yoga even more fascinating.
At the height of Auroville’s most recent Perestroika (Russian word for deep and often difficult change), I was walking in the Matrimandir gardens, and before my inner vision I saw the Matrimandir and the same garden—lighter, brighter, immeasurably more beautiful—where children were playing freely and joyfully. Those children were all of us, Aurovilians, light and luminous. The very fact of choice of alignment—or even non-alignment—with any group or “side”—or even staying in the middle—appeared contrived, illusory, and alien to that beautiful world.
In all difficult situations, one thing is clear to me: whatever happens to Auroville or within Auroville, no one has cancelled The Divine Mother, Sri Aurobindo, the process of human evolution, or personal transformation.
As I was born in the Soviet Union, this helped me to go through Auroville crises with less emotional trouble than for others. We shouldn’t be afraid of the word “crisis”—for it is the peak moment of change, that destroys the rigid and opens the way to transformation.
Auroville is for transformation, for change. For me a crisis is a great possibility to grow, face inner falsity, find truth behind, make another step towards the purpose Auroville was created for—the evolution of humanity, New Species, the Supramental.
And the external means used by the Universe—by Agni, Divine Consciousness—are individually tailored for each person. Some play elections and political struggle; some build roads, some sew clothes or cook food, care for the forest, dance, raise children or balance financial accounts, etc…
The game is in full swing: evolution is inevitable, and it is far better to participate in it—consciously.
