The Matrimandir and The Twelve Powers of The Mother.pdf

“What the new consciousness wants … no more divisions.”

The Mother clearly told us that Unity is a fact of the new consciousness and is there whether we feel it or not. So how do we build, manifest and live this underlying, factual unity? To help us, Auroville has a unique and powerful tool – the energy of the Matrimandir, and its symbols.

About the Matrimandir, The Mother gave these messages:

“A place … for trying to find one’s consciousness.”

“It is like the Force, the central Force of Auroville, the cohesive Force of Auroville.”

“The Matrimandir will be the soul of Auroville”

As we know, the Inner work precedes and prepares the Outer progress – and every aspect of the Matrimandir is an opening to this interior work: the Inner Chamber – with its constant beam of Light, the Twelve Meditation Petals – each representing and radiating a specific force, and the Twelve Gardens, with their aspiration to realize and share conscious beauty.

The Twelve Meditation Petals are based on the Twelve Powers of The Mother as incarnated in The Mother’s Symbol. In 1927, Sri Aurobindo gave the colors – with their corresponding energies – for each quality – or power – in her symbol.

The Mother’s Symbol

The Mother told about her symbol and the 12 Petals: “The central circle represents the Divine Consciousness, The four petals represent the four powers of the Mother. The twelve petals represent the twelve powers of the Mother manifested for Her work.”

Sri Aurobindo wrote: “Essentially (in general principle) the 12 powers are the vibrations that are necessary for the complete manifestation.”

For Matrimandir, The Mother named each petal of the Twelve Petals according to the twelve outer petals of her symbol. Each carries the corresponding color per her Symbol and each color emanates a specific force with symbolic and vibrational powers. These are powers and qualities that we can aspire to, consciously align with and intentionally live and manifest.

Below are explanations given by The Mother on different occasions – some from her messages on flowers that incarnate these qualities.

The Twelve Powers of The Mother

Sincerity, Humility, Gratitude, Perseverance, Aspiration, Receptivity, Progress,
Courage, Goodness, Generosity, Equality, Peace

“Simple sincerity is the beginning of all progress.”

“A sincere heart is worth all the extraordinary powers in the world.”

“Every act of sincerity carries in itself its own reward: the feeling of purification, of
soaring upwards, of liberation one gets when one has rejected even one particle of
falsehood.

Sincerity is the safeguard, the protection, the guide, and finally the transforming power.”

“The true humility is humility before the Divine, a precise exact living sense that one is nothing, one
can do nothing, understand nothing without the Divine….”

“Humility is the recognition that one does not know, that one knows nothing,

and that there may be something beyond what presently appears to us as being truest, noblest, most
disinterested.”

“Gratitude opens all the closed doors and allows the saving Grace to enter.”

“Physically, materially upon earth it is in gratitude that one finds the form of purest delight.”

“Of all the movements within the reach of human consciousness gratitude is certainly the one that
draws you most out of your ego.”

“Perseverance is patience in action.” “The decision to go to the very end.”

“To be ready to begin again a hundred times the same thing with the same intensity
with which one did it the first time

and as though one had never done it before.

If one persists, there comes a time when one is victorious.

Victory is to the most persistent.”

“Aspiration is one of the marvellous gifts of grace given to human nature.”

“One must have a fixed and unfailing aspiration, vigilant and constant, an aspiration of
the entire being,

an aspiration that takes hold of you completely,

an aspiration to unity with the Divine …

…to give oneself totally to the Divine Consciousness, so that the Divine may be all in all.”

“Receptivity is the capacity of admitting and retaining the Divine Workings”.

“Receptivity – the power to receive the Divine Force

and to feel its presence and the presence of the Mother in it

and allow it to work, guiding one’s sight and will and action.”

“The purpose of earthly life is progress;”

“It is especially the will for progress and self-purification that lights the fire.

“When those who have strong will turn it towards spiritual progress and purification,

they automatically light the fire within themselves.”

“Courage is to be able to face everything in life without the slightest emotion in any part
of the being and with a constant awareness of the Divine Presence;”

“An indomitable courage, a perfect sincerity, a total self-giving to the extent that you do
not calculate or bargain,

you do not give with the idea of receiving, you do not offer yourself with the intention of
being protected,

you do not have a faith that needs proofs – that is indispensable for advancing on earth, –
this alone can shelter you against all dangers.”

“You must be good for the love of goodness, then you are sure to advance on the way.”

“One must do as well as one can, the best one can, but without expecting a result, without doing it
with a view to the result.

Just this attitude, to expect a reward for a good action – to become good because one thinks that this
will make life easier – takes away all value from the good action.”

“Generosity gives and gives itself without bargaining. Gives for the joy of giving.”

This is a power, a Divine movement that spreads, diffuses, throws out freely forces and things and
whatever else it possesses

on all the levels of nature, from the more material to the most spiritual planes.

If truly surrendered to the Divine, it will be utilized as an instrument for the Divine work.”

“Equal in all circumstances, keeps a perfect mastery of himself and remains peaceful in the
presence of whatever happens.”

“A perfect equality of our spirit and nature is a means by which we can move back from the
troubled and ignorant outer consciousness into the inner kingdom of heaven

and possess the Spirit’s eternal kingdoms of greatness, joy and peace…”

“Nowhere will you be able to find peace unless you have peace in your heart.”

“No matter what one wants to realize, one must begin by establishing this perfect and immutable
peace;

it is the basis from which one must work.”

“Peace and stillness are the great remedy for disease.

When we can bring peace in our cells, we are cured.”

These twelve qualities,

if developed with sincerity and perseverance,

can become true powers within ourselves,

providing us with the tools for building human unity,

with ourselves becoming shapers and sharers

of the new consciousness The Mother said already exists

and which we together all seek!
