PHOTO: THE MOTHER GIVING “TERRACE DARSHAN” ON 24th NOVEMBER 1969
We are pleased to present this short video clip of The Mother on her terrace, taken in 1964 dating from the period when Auroville was in its “pre-dawn” period. Please click here.
We are grateful to Auroville’s Rakhal of AuroImage for preparing this extract from the film “Les 3 Mondes de Pondichéry” held in the INA Archives (Paris, France).
Some background: The Sanskrit word “Darshan” means “seeing”. In the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, there were 4 days a year when people could walk past Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, who were seated in a special room in Sri Aurobindo’s personal quarters, to see them – and be seen. Additionally, The Mother would appear on her balcony or terrace:
– Balcony Darshan: From early 1938 to March 1962, the Mother gave darshan every morning around sunrise, standing on the northern balcony on the first floor of the Ashram main building, to the disciples assembled on the street below.
– Terrace Darshan: From 21 February 1963 to 15 August 1973, the Mother gave darshan four times a year from the balcony on the east terrace outside her rooms on the second floor of the Ashram main building. She gave this darshan in the late afternoon before sunset to the disciples gathered below on the street.
