My name is Louis, Louis Cohen. I was born in Algeria in 1947 and when I was 10, my parents, my 2 brothers and I, moved to Nice in the south of France. I spent my childhood there, in a state of inner revolt, in search of something else … and at 23 I left to take a trip around the world. Since I was beginning with India, I was asked to bring some vehicle spare parts to Auroville (for which I had absolutely no interest). I had met Luce who was the Auroville representative in the south of France and it was she who asked me if I could bring replacement parts to repair French cars that had broken down. They were for the vehicles that were part of ‘The Caravan’ that had left Paris for Auroville in ‘69. (Luce is the mother of Geneviève who later became my wife!) When I arrived at Aspiration, I met Vincenzo who led the group, and I gave the parts to him.
Je m’appelle Louis, Louis Cohen. Je suis né en Algérie en 1947 et quand j’ai eu 10 ans, mes parents et mes 2 frères, nous avons déménagé à Nice dans le Sud de la France. J’y ai passé ma jeunesse, révolté, en quête d’autre chose… et à 23 ans, je suis parti pour faire le tour du monde… Comme je commençais par l’Inde, on m’a demandé de ramener à Auroville (pour laquelle je n’avais aucun intérêt ) des pièces de voitures de rechange. J’avais rencontré Luce qui représentait Auroville dans le sud de la France et elle m’a demandé si je pouvais emmener ces pieces de voitures françaises qui étaient en panne et ce qui leur permettraient de les réparer. C’était pour les véhicules qui avaient formé ‘La Caravane’, partie de Paris pour Auroville fin 1969. (Luce est la mère de Geneviève qui plus tard est devenue mon épouse !) Quand je suis arrivé a Aspiration, j’ai rencontré Vincenzo qui en était le leader, a qui j’ai remis les pieces de voitures.

In fact, the contact between us was so immediately deep that I spent my first night at Aspiration for which The Mother’s permission was needed … as it was also needed for every night for the four years that followed ! I had planned to stay for 24 hours and I stayed for 4 years ! (and I never went around the world except inside myself) ! My soul had been called to the “Great Adventure” of The Mother who I often met …
En effet, le contact fut suffisamment profond pour que je passe ma première nuit a Aspiration pour laquelle il fallait avoir la permission de Mère pour y dormir – et bien sûr toutes les autres nuits pendant 4 années! J’avais prévu de rester 24 heures et je suis resté 4 ans (et je n’ai pas fait le tour du monde sinon intérieurement) ! Mon âme a été appelée à la ” Grande Aventure” de Mère que j’ai rencontré souvent …
My meeting with The Mother and with Auroville radically changed my life. I became friends with Vincent, Jean-Pierre (Bhagawandas), André … and the others. I worked at Auropolyester – a unit created by Jean-Pierre that manufactured furnishings and interior decoration products, which we showed to the Mother every week. She was very interested in these new products and their beauty ! For the schools, we also produced the fiber-glass and polyester roofing materials that Roger Anger had designed – and which received The Mother’s Blessings !
Ma rencontre avec Mère et avec Auroville a radicalement changé ma vie.Je me suis lié d’amitié avec Vincent, Jean-Pierre (Bhagawandas), André… et les autres. Je travaillais à Auropolyester – unité crée par Jean-Pierre qui fabriquait des produits d’ameublement et decoration, que nous montrions a Mère chaque semaine. Elle était trés intéressée par ces nouveaux produits et leur beauté ! Nous avons fabriqué aussi les toits en fibre de verre/polyester pour les écoles que Roger Anger avait dessiné et qui ont reçu les Benedictions de Mère!

At the same time, along with the others, I read “Notes along the Way”- relating Mother’s experiences with her cells and her supramental body. And I was convinced – we were all convinced – that SHE would get through. And we even had a kind of youthful presumption to imagine that we were going to get through too in this life! Then in 1972, I participated in digging the hole for the foundations of the Matrimandir – from the start to the end.
En même temps, je lisais avec les autres “les Notes sur le Chemin” – les expériences cellulaires de Mère et de son corps supramental et j’étais persuadé, nous étions persuadés, qu’ELLE allait traverser. Et nous avions la prétention de la jeunesse d’imaginer que nous allions, nous aussi, traverser dans cette vie ! Puis en 1972, j’ai participé a creuser le trou pour les fondations du Matrimandir et j’y ai participé du tout début à la fin totale.
After these four years, I went back to spend a year in France where I sold Auroville products, principally the artistic mica panels that we made at Auro-Polyester. I started a family, had two children while keeping up a rhythm of annual stays in Auroville.
And I worked in real estate with my brother Jean-Pierre, very often on building renovations, giving me skills in this field. And it enabled me to finance the majority of the building costs for Citadines, The Youth House, and a part of the funds needed for the construction of Sunship.
Après ces 4 années, j’ai passé une année en France à diffuser des produits d’Auroville et principalement les tableaux en mica que l’on fabriquait à Auro Polyester. J’ai fondé une famille avec 2 enfants, tout en maintenant un rythme de séjours annuels à Auroville.
Et j’ai travaillé dans l’immobilier avec mon frère Jean-Pierre, souvent sur les rénovations des bâtiments. Ce travail m’a donné un acquis des compétences dans le domaine et aussi il m’a permis de financer en grande partie Citadines, La Maison des Jeunes, et partiellement Sunship.
Starting in the ‘80s I became close with Roger Anger. In ‘86, as the first “Friend of Auroville”, I began the construction of a house in Auromodèle that I shared with Génèviève who I had just met. This house let Roger and Jacqueline come and live in Auroville. Then they built their on house just next door.
Je m’étais rapproché de Roger Anger dès les années 80. En ‘86, en étant le premier “Ami d’Auroville”, j’ai entrepris la construction d’une maison à Auromodèle, que je partagerai en 1987 avec Geneviève que je venais de rencontrer. Cette maison a permis à Roger et Jacqueline de venir vivre à Auroville. Puis, ils ont construit la leur à côté.
From 1988 to 1998 we were very often at Crestet (Roger and Jacqueline’s French home) and I began to divide my time between Auroville and France according to the same rhythm as Roger(about 6 months a year in each place) so I could work with him on the Matrimandir and the township’s development, up until his departure in 2008. After Roger left, I managed the building (practically full-time) of several important residential projects.
De 1988 à 1998 nous allions très souvent au Crestet (résidence française de Roger et Jacqueline) et puis j’ai commencé à partager mes années dans les mêmes rythmes que les allées et venues de Roger (6 mois par an environ), pour travailler avec lui au Matrimandir et au développement de la ville, jusqu’à son départ en 2008. Roger parti, j’ai géré la construction (quasiment à plein temps) de plusieurs projets résidentiels d’importance.

For all these constructions, all the finishing works was carried out by Auroville units in a spirit of great harmony, and it was only the major structural works that were done by an outside company.
Pour toutes ces constructions, tous les travaux de second oeuvre ont été réalisés par des entreprises Auroviliennes dans une grande harmonie et seul le gros oeuvre a été réalisé par une entreprise extérieure.
For the management teams at Citadines and Sunship, their independence for functioning is very important so they can ensure and continue to offer the best human ecology possible. In that spirit, they have made the following choices :
Les équipes de Citadines et de Sunship tiennent beaucoup à leur indépendance de fonctionnement, afin de conserver et offrir pour une meilleure écologie humaine, les choix suivants :
– Most of the flats are given for free (to Newcomers or former Aurovilians who have the need for better housing). And all the flats are furnished, and ready to use.
La plupart des appartements sont offerts (aux Newcomers ou anciens Auroviliens qui ont besoin d’être mieux logés). Et tous les appartements sont meublés et prêts à l’usage
– Cleaning services are provided by a team of housekeepers. There are no personal housekeepers … plus a collective laundry service takes care of all washing and ironing for everyone.
L’entretien est assuré par une équipe de “Ammas”. Il n’y a pas de Ammas personnelles … Une laverie s’occupe du lavage et du repassage du linge de chacun.
– A technician takes care of all repair work. A gardener keeps us our living space – a natural and wooded environment of beauty !
De même un technicien prend soin de toutes les réparations.Un jardinier nous permet de vivre dans un environnement naturel et boisé de toute beauté !
– At the collective cafeteria we meet over meals that are varied, and always very delicious shared by 14 nationalities ! The atmosphere is always joyous and very friendly.

– And Citadine’s ART CENTER provides excellent exhibitions in an ART GALLERY created by DOMINIQUE DARR. An office-workshop manages holds the archives of her thousands of photos of Auroville.
Et un Centre d’Art à Citadines offre d’excellentes expositions dans une Galerie d’Art crée par DOMINIQUE DARR et un bureau-atelier permettant l’archivage de ses milliers de photos d’Auroville.
In 2015 when PREMA left her body I took her place for the management and development of AUROMODE .
En 2015 quand PREMA disparaît, j’ai pris sa place pour la gestion et le développement d’Auromode.
Now as always, I’m looking towards building the future, and my projects are :

Plus, in the context of the “Galaxy”, participate in the building of the “GOODWILL” Line of Force (whose first phase is for housing 500 people for the growing township) as well as in the construction of the building for CIRHU (the International Center for Research in Human Unity) on the Matrimandir lake. .
Plus, dans le contexte de la “Galaxie”, participer à la construction de la Ligne de Force “BONNE VOLONTE” (dont la 1ère phase est pour loger 500 personnes pour l’évolution de la ville) ainsi que pour le bâtiment du CIRHU (Centre International de Recherche de l’Unité Humaine) sur le lac du Matrimandir.
A MOMENT FOR TAKING STOCK – UN MOMENT POUR FAIRE LE POINT
Now, I’m taking this moment of reviewing my life to ask myself some questions:

What did life before Auroville teach me – what was I searching for?
Qu’est ce que la vie avant Auroville m’a appris, que cherchais-je ?
I was in revolt against society, was an atheist, not at all interested in studies, nor the army, and received a military waiver. I wanted to discover the world. I experienced life in a Kibbutz in Israel – I was seeking a life of friendship and some collective living.
J’étais révolté par la société, et athée, pas du tout intéressé par les études ni par l’armée, je me suis fais réformer. Je voulais découvrir le monde. J’ai expérimenté le kibboutz en Israel – je recherchais la vie amicale et un peu collective.
What did I learn afterwards, before Roger ?
Qu’est ce que j’ai appris ensuite, avant Roger ?
I was searching but without knowing what I was searching for. Discovering the Divine changed my life and I felt my soul had been called to be with The Mother for Auroville.
J’étais en quête sans savoir de quoi . Découvrir le Divin a changé ma vie et j’ai senti que mon âme avait été appelée auprès de Mère pour Auroville.
What did I learn with Roger ?
Qu’est ce que j’ai appris avec Roger ?
The relationship with beauty, creation, architecture … a great sharing of fraternal friendship that we shared so often over chess, and cocktails ! … and we laughed so much together ! And the recognition of his role as my spiritual Father to me.
La rélation à la beauté, à la création, à l’architecture…un grand partage d’amitié fraternelle nous partagions si souvent les échecs et l’apéro ! …et nous avons tellement ri ensemble ! Et la reconnaissance du Père spirituel qu’il a été pour moi.
What did I learn after Roger’s departure ?
Qu’est ce que j’ai appris depuis le départ de Roger ?
When he left his body, I felt I integrated cells from him that came into me (like others have, surely). Roger’s words impregnated my constructions at Auroville. In France, my worked with real estate with my brother Jean-Pierre was solely with renovations. Here in Auroville, I constructed new buildings, and I discovered the resistances to manifesting something new, plus the perserverance needed to go all the way till the end !
Quand il a quitté son corps, j’ai comme intégré des cellules à lui qui sont venues en moi (comme d’autres sûrement). Les paroles de Roger imprègnent mes constructions à Auroville. En France quand je faisais de l’immobilier avec mon frère Jean-Pierre, c’était uniquement des rénovations. Ici j’ai fait des immeubles neufs et j’ai découvert les résistances pour manifester quelque chose … plus la persévérance qu’il faut pour aller jusqu’au bout !

I have a profound gratitude to Geneviève – with whom I’ve waled my life’s path for over 36 years – for her help with this testimonial, but more than that, for the daily sharing of our Aurovilian life, and our transformation, in our Eternal Love.
J’ai une gratitude profonde pour Geneviève – avec qui nous cheminons depuis plus de 36 années -pour l’aide apportée à l’élaboration de ce témoignage, mais surtout pour le partage quotidien de notre vie aurovilienne et de notre transformation, dans notre Amour Eternel.
I am grateful for having Ami and Chloe as my children – who have always helped me to progress further on the path, and with so much shared happiness ! And for the past 2 and 1/2 years, the joy of my grandson Solal.
J’ai une gratitude d’avoir eu Ami et Chloe comme mes enfants qui m’ont toujours fait avancer sur le chemin, avec tant de joie partagée. Et depuis 2 ans et demi, le bonheur d’un petit-fils Solal.
I am grateful to my brothers and mother (a joyous group) and to have worked professionally for so many years with my brother Jean-Pierre (who is also my soul brother) – work which helped me to serve Auroville.
J’ai une gratitude envers ma mère et mes frères (une bande joyeuse) et d’avoir cheminé professionnellement tant d’ années avec mon frère Jean-Pierre (qui est aussi mon frère d’âme) – un travail qui m’a aidé à servir Auroville.
I am grateful to have shared such deep links with all the soul brothers and soul sisters who I have discovered at Auroville over so many years.
J’ai une gratitude d’avoir tissé des liens si profonds avec mes soeurs/frères d’âme que j’ai découvert à Auroville depuis tant d’années.
And I have a profound gratitude for The Mother for the opportunity to serve Her through my work in Auroville.
Et j’ai une gratitude profonde à Mère d’avoir pu la servir à travers mon travail à Auroville.
I would like to tell those who read this testimony about my JOY for being at Auroville and for constructing The Mother’s City. This joy has never left me despite the resistances for manifesting the first city that the Divine wants to incarnate on earth.
J’aimerai dire aux personnes qui lisent ce témoignage, ma JOIE d’être à Auroville et de construire la Ville de Mère. Cette Joie ne m’a jamais quittée malgré les résistances pour manifester la première ville Divine qui veut s’incarner sur terre.
My FAITH in Mother is unshakeable. Auroville for me is a city of service, in the service of The Mother, and till my last breath I will be there to build this city, while transforming myself.
Ma FOI en Mère est inébranlable, Auroville est pour moi une ville de services, au service de Mère et jusqu’à mon dernier souffle je serai là pour construire cette ville tout en me transformant.
