Today, 99 years ago, Sri Aurobindo reached a milestone, a new stage and foundation in his quest for a new principle of evolution which he termed supramental. Explaining this, he wrote:

“The 24th November, 1926, was the descent of Krishna into the physical. Krishna is not the supramental Light. The descent of Krishna would mean the descent of the Overmind Godhead preparing, though not itself actually, the descent of Supermind and Ananda. Krishna is the Anandamaya; he supports the evolution through the overmind leading it towards his Ananda.”

Then, nearly 30 years later, on 29th February 1956, The Mother had that decisive experience of the “descent of Supermind” in the earth atmosphere. One characteristic of Supermind is instantaneousness. Today, communication technology around the world has become instantaneous. In fact, if there is any sector of humanity which is witnessing the phenomena of “unending education, constant progress’ – two of the ideals of Auroville put forth in the Auroville Charter – it is the technological sector. AI, at the leading edge, has now been regarded as more than a technology. Those in the know of things, those who are in the forefront of technological advances, are themselves awestruck at the speed with which resulting new discoveries, new innovations and new technologies are developing.

In the light of Sri Aurobindo & The Mother, all these discoveries and developments to transcend human limits are signs of the urges of Nature – the evolving spirit of which humanity is a part. From another perspective, these may also be considered as “making matter ready for the manifestation of the spirit”. An increasing number of futurists now put forth the view that what is going to be most important in the times to come is meaning of life, purpose of life, goal of life.

Here, we believe, Auroville assumes a greater meaning, a greater relevance because she offers a view of life and of the world which are satisfying to human reason – and at the same time give an experience-based light to walk on the path that leads to a new, better and higher equilibrium of existence.

Cherishing this perspective, we at A4A carry on with the work to make Auroville’s material foundation whole, unified, and integral. This year, approximately 53 acres of land have been gifted to the Auroville Foundation by Aurovilians to add to the consolidation and protection of Auroville’s designated land. We remain grateful for this – and all collaboration – that adds to its physical base for manifesting the future that Sri Aurobindo & The Mother envisioned and worked to prepare.
