We are the Keepers of the Flame
November holds the days of Sri Aurobindo’s landmark spiritual realisation and The Mother’s departure from earthly life – both bestowing on us a heritage, and for those who choose, a responsibility as keepers of the Flame. And what is this Flame? It is the Flame of Consecration for building a New World – envisioned by Sri Aurobindo and initiated into action by The Mother in what she named The City of Dawn, Auroville. And the tools for realizing the promise of this Flame, she said, are to be found in “The Twelve Powers”.
On March 20th 1934, Sri Aurobindo explained: “… the twelve powers of The Mother (are) manifested for Her work … The first eight concern the attitude towards the Divine: Sincerity, Humility, Gratitude, Perseverance, Aspiration, Receptivity, Progress, Courage … and the last four, towards humanity: Goodness, Generosity, Equality, Peace.” These twelve powers are integrated materially into Auroville – in the body of the Matrimandir, its twelve meditation chambers, and twelve gardens. Each Chamber is consecrated to a Power, and as in The Mother’s symbol, each has an associated color with a specific force.
Together, they represent all the colors of the rainbow – a fitting image for the work to be done, for humanity is a rainbow. Each person is made different yet made to be complementary to the others. It is this rainbow of aspiring differences that can build the unity that Auroville is meant to incarnate. Auroville was created as a first experiment and physical base for the spiritual evolution that Sri Aurobindo said must come. Our role – with aspiration, sincerity and perseverance, with generosity and goodness – is to keep alive this Flame and grow the City of Dawn. The need is to do all this integrally, unified, and together … not in spite of our differences, but with them and through them. This is our profound – inescapable – and privileged challenge!
In keeping with this goal, Acres for Auroville works to consolidate and protect the land designated for the incarnation of the City of Dawn – for its step-by step, outer and inner, individual and collective realization.
A4A is now in its 12th year of solidarity fundraising to consolidate and protect
Auroville’s City & Greenbelt land – and the area around the Matrimandir.
Join us for ensuring a secure future for Auroville’s physical body & base!
