15th August – Birthday of Sri Aurobindo & India’s 70th Independence Day
“Auroville wants to be the first realisation of human unity based on the teaching of Sri Aurobindo where men of all countries would be at home.” – The Mother
Seventy years ago, at the request of All India Radio, Sri Aurobindo wrote a message that was broadcast on the eve of India’s independence on August 14, 1947. Some extracts:
“August 15th, 1947 is the birthday of free India … it signifies the entry into the comity of nations of a new power with untold potentialities which has a great part to play in determining the political, social, cultural and spiritual future of humanity. August 15th is my own birthday … I take this coincidence … as the sanction and seal of the Divine Force that guides my steps on the work with which I began life …”
He wrote of the dreams he long cherished, two of which relate to the Auroville vision:
- unification of the human world … there must grow up an international spirit and outlook
- a step in evolution which would raise man to a higher and larger consciousness … it must proceed through a growth of the spirit and the inner consciousness
Auroville exists to build a first home for incarnating and striving for these dreams …
