Onward into the 6th Year of Acres for Auroville (A4A)

15th August 2019
Auroville seeks to be a living example of the unity of East and West – a precious effort in our times!   And the Acres for Auroville campaign is one example of the aspiration for unity. Five years ago, on 15th August 2014, we launched this joint collaboration of Auroville International, based in the West, and LFAU (Lands for Auroville Unified) based in Auroville, in the East.  These 5 years have been highly encouraging, thanks to the cooperation and solidarity of friends like you! The campaign has grown, and expanded its reach, becoming an integral part of the City of Dawn’s landscape. Together, we have achieved many significant results for the emergence of a harmonious, beautiful, green, and inspiring city of Auroville. So, with gratitude for the past and optimism for the future, we step into A4A’s 6th year on 15th August 2019!
The month of August cherishes in its heart a very special day –  August 15th – Sri Aurobindo’s birthday, as well as India’s Independence Day, after centuries of servitude.  It is well-known that on this day Sri Aurobindo wrote his message to India outlining his 5 dreams at the request of All India Radio, Trichy. What is less known is his message to America, at the request of a group of American disciples, two years later, in 1949. In this edition of  A4A’s quarterly letter and flier, we focus on that message which is pertinent not just to America, not just to the West, but to India and the East as well.  To read Sri Aurobindo’s full message, please click here. To see the video of Aurovilian Aravinda reading the text in front of  the Banyan Tree by the Matrimandir, please click here.
Now that they have a space to grow, many positive developments are coming up on land bought with your donations! One beautiful example is the establishment of new youth housing – a vital need of a new generation of Aurovilians between ages 20 and 35 –  and the dynamic “Kriya” youth community that is now growing up on the new plots! Here are news and views of what’s happening at Kriya – take a look!  (See also our clip of new AV land – all bought thanks to your solidarity and donations!).
We continue our series on the enthusiasm and energy of Auroville’s pioneers. This issue focuses on Ed Giordano, an early Aurovilian, and his life at Forecomers. Ed’s report brings us back to Auroville’s beginnings and the extreme challenges of those early days that called forth many innovations. He also recalls his work on the Matrimandir, and the “utter necessity and delightful challenge of greenwork”.  The photos speak loudly as well!  Ed’s closes his fine memoir by stressing the importance of the work of Acres for Auroville. (By the way, our future issues will showcase the role of « lady pioneers » that made it all happen too!)
Also, we are happy to publish the views and optimism of Auroville’s newcomers! This time, our report is by Joël from Belgium who is finishing his newcomer period and with whom we have the pleasure of collaborating for A4A. He writes about his three rich and creative years working for Auroville and the goal of human unity and new progress that inspire and motivate him.
